SCIENCE & BUDDHISM
June 28 @ 2pm
* Meeting online via Zoom *
The Story of More
Jikoji is closed, but we’ll be going online for our June 28, Science & Buddhism discussion, around ideas found in “The Story of More” by Hope Jahren. Our discussion will be led by Connie Ralls. Join us via Zoom at 2pm.
The Story of More; How we Got to Climate Change and Where to Go from Here, by Hope Jahren, isbasically about how we (and "we" mostly means OECD countries) have harnessed technology to become efficient producers of food and energy on a mass scale, to the extent that we are destroying the planet we live on.
Hope Jahren's answer is for us to "use less and share more." How do we do that? Let's discuss!
Here are some recent items that tie into the deep problems we face:
A Letter From the Coronavirus (on YouTube)
How Climate Change is contributing to Skyrocketing Rates of Infectious Disease - ProPublica
From National Parks to the Deep Sea, Plastic Pollution is showing up wherever scientists look - Washington Post
The Story of Stuff - Story of Stuff Project (on YouTube)
This 21-minute video made in 2007 vividly makes the point about how consumerism works.
Lots of other work ties into this, Joanna Macy's and Paul Hawken's come to mind. The topic is a huge and depressing one, but one I think we need to integrate into our practice however we can.
ONLINE ZENDO ETIQUETTE
To help maintain as best we can the intimacy and integrity of an in-person gathering, we ask all who join us online to please observe the following practices.
