Sesshin: The Five Houses of Zen

Sesshin: Five Houses of Zen

• At Jikoji ZEN Center & ONLINE (ZOOM) •

An invitation to attend as you are able

In Kobun’s style of making sesshin as inclusive as possible, all are invited to attend as they can in person and online, without the need to commit to the full sesshin.

What is a Sesshin?

Sesshin, which means “gathering the mind,” is an opportunity to deepen you practice.

Who is this Sesshin for?

This sesshin is ideal for beginners as well as experienced practitioners.

A teaching sesshin

  • Dharma Talks on the Five Houses of Zen: Teachings from the Five Houses of Zen (禅宗五家), —Guiyang (潙仰宗), Linji (臨濟宗), Caodong (曹洞宗), Yunmen (雲門宗), and Fayan (法眼宗)—each talk will consider a facet of the history and development of Zen.

  • Community & Ritual: Shared meals and sangha discussion are welcome in this shared exploration and practice.

Led by Chiezan Kyle Tomczyk

Jikoji is pleased to welcome back our friend (and family!) Sensei Chiezan Kyle Tomczyk.

Chiezan has been a resident monk of Jikoji's sister temple Sokukoji in Battle Creek Michigan for more than ten years. Chiezan was transmitted by Sokuzan Roshi of Sokukoji, who was transmitted by Shoho Michael Newhall Roshi of Jikoji.

Chiezan will teach The Five Houses of Zen. In this retreat we will return to our original practice of zazen and what it means to practice a "formless meditation". In returning to the foundation of our path we will also explore some of the earliest Chinese Tang Dynasty Zen masters who fearlessly went against cultural and institutionalized tradition to bring practitioners back to the heart of the Buddha's message of self realization. This timely retreat intends to inspire practitioners to connect more deeply with their personal meditation practice in the midst of intensified polarization and societal demands.

All are welcome! Please sign up below to register for the Sesshin.
