WELLNESS : Our Theme FOR 2019

On Sunday January 27, at 2 pm, Jikoji's Discussions will resume, on the nexus, conflicts, and consensus trends within Science and Buddhism; and more specifically for 2019, on Wellness as our main theme. Earlier that day, our 11:45 am Dharma Talk (part of Jikoji's regular Sunday Program), will be on the same topic, but more from the perspective of Buddhist teachings, and Zen, while the 2pm SB Discussion will focus more on the perspectives of science.

Wellness as optimization of potential is intriguing from the perspectives of both dharma and science. We note also that Wiki divides Wellness into these categories, though further divisions are possible:

Wellness (medicine), the scientific meaning: health, freedom from disease
Well-being, psychological wellness
Wellness (alternative medicine)
Workplace wellness
Wellness tourism

Topic ideas? We’d love to hear your thoughts on specific topics for discussion. And please consider volunteering to lead, moderate or fascilitate one of our discussions on your Wellness sub-topic of interest. Ross Smith for example suggests following up on 2018 March’s Happiness, specifically the second half of Jonathan Haidt's The Happiness Hypothesis and Haidt’s more recent research on the subject. Cliff Isberg suggests following up on 2018 April’s Evolution of Emotions based on Robert Write’s book “Why Buddhism is True”, noting “Science is Catching up to the Buddha”, a brief list of Wright’s key ideas. Nico Detourn notes the new book of interest by David Presti, Mind Beyond Brain: Buddhism, Science, and the Paranormal.
