“Stopping for Haiku”

Some things we experience are so mysterious and imbued with so much meaning that only an artistic form such as haiku can reel it in with images that reach far deeper than words.

Emily Marie Bording and Gerow Reece will host a Haiku writing workshop with the intention of exploring poetry, the natural beauty of Jikoji, inner sensory impressions and our wondrous connective ordinary moments.

Intent on sharing her passion for writing and reciting, Emily Marie facilitates poetry workshops, hosts spoken word open-mics, and attends writing workshops, including Catamaran Conferences. Emily self-published two anthologies of poetry and art, titled, Cornflower Muse and Haiku Ripples. She has taught creative writing and haiku poetry at Santa Cruz County grade schools and high schools. She has participated as a judge for “Poetry-Out-Loud” and has been a featured poet at several venues, including; UCSC, Poetry Santa Cruz, Cabrillo College, Mt Shasta Art Galleries, Open-Mics and festivals. Her poetry and art have been published in Monterey Poetry Review, Porter Gulch Review, Poetry Lovers, Floating Zendo News, Santa Barbra Zen Center Arts Blog, Mother Arts and is a grateful mother to a secret bodhisattva.

After doing alternative service in Germany and Austria, Gerow Reece, as a grantee of the East West Center in Hawaii in the mid-sixties,  practiced Zen at some Kyoto temples, including (the old) Antaiji while also studying calligraphy with Morita Shiryu. He taught ESL for many years in Los Angeles and studied ceremonial tea with Matsumoto Sensei there. He first visited Jikoji in 2000 and has since resided here for three different periods of time focussed largely on the gardens.
