THOSE WHO SEE LIGHTNING
AND THINK NOTHING
HOW PRECIOUS THEY ARE!
Basho
Please bring in one or two poems and a spare to read to our group. If you would like to go on with the prompt “I am always close to this” that is fine. Here is another poem that may inspire you in your own work:
Only be willing to search for poetry, and there will be poetry.
My soul, a tiny speck, is my tutor.
Evening sun and fragrant grass are common things,But, with understanding, they can become glorious verse.

PauPaula Jones became a student of Kobun Chino the first night she attended Santa Cruz Zendo. In the same year, with her young daughter, she became a practicing resident. She also began attending sesshins at Hidden Villa in Los Altos Hills, where she first met Angie Boissevain. They were to meet many years later at Jikoji on the occasion of Kobun's funeral. Since receiving transmission from Angie, she has served as teacher or shared that post at earlier Jikoji sesshins.
Like Kobun and Angie, she is a poet, though no comparisons are being made here. Luckily, she was able to earn a living teaching English as well as poetry at two community colleges and also teach, as adjunct instructor at a university. Poetry has always been included in her curriculum.
