Kobun Memorial Weekend, 2019
Join us as we spend the weekend honoring the memory of Jikoji's founder Kobun Chino Otogawa Roshi. We begin Friday evening, July 26, with a social dinner, then a walk to the ridge in appreciation of the Santa Cruz Mountains, so much a part of Kobun's vision for Jikoji.
Our formal program starts Saturday, July 27, at 9 am with a morning of contemplative sitting. After lunch, at 2pm, we will be reading from the transcript of Thursday-mornings.org, treating it more like a re-enactment than a text. The idea is to come closer to the feeling of being in the room with Kobun than “studying” his words. So we will take turns, moving quickly around the room, making his words, and sometimes words that we may have forgotten we ourselves have said, come alive.
On Sunday, after our usual Sunday program and a brief introduction, we will form a procession to the memorial site and offer incense while chanting the Daihi Shin Dharani. Buffet lunch will be served on Saturday and Sunday. At 2 pm Sunday in the large zendo, open to all, we will discuss Death in view of our Kobun Memorial and of all beings, and in terms of the nexus of Science and Buddhism.
Overnight accommodations are available on our Reservations page.
